Wine is a very old drink whose heritage can be traced back to 6000 BC. It can be defined as mystical, romantic, and a ritual; the Bible has many references to wine for social and ceremonial applications.
Over the millennia many historical figures have commented about the allure of wine as a drink of choice that also makes life a little more bearable. “Wine makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance.” –Benjamin Franklin.
The intrigue and mystical character of Argentina as a country and a New World wine country is profound. Many winemakers in Argentina have contributed to propelling the wines of Argentina, front and center on the worlds oenophile stage. Thanks to technology and research Argentina produces wine of elegance and repute. A leader in this trend toward excellent wines is Dr. Laura Catena who started an institute to improve fruit and wines from high elevations and arid vineyards. This knowledge is now shared with UC Davis. And we will be visiting her winery.
Mendoza is the epicenter of Argentine wines and people like Ward Lay, Michel Rolland and Paul Hobbs of Napa, CA recognized the importance of Mendoza as a source of premier wines and have built new wineries there. But, we also recognize that it was immigrants from Italy, France and Spain that collectively understood the attraction of Mendoza for new wines.
